Periander, Ruler of Corinth, allows his slave, Arion, to take part in a singing competition in Sicily. Returning victorious, Arion is thrown overboard by the sailors who steal his prize money. A Dolphin rescues him and carries him safely home on her back but Periander thinks Arion is lying and throws him into prison. He puts the Dolphin on show in a small pool where she pines for Arion and dies. Too late, the ship’s Captain returns to confirm their story. Arion is released and sings a lament for his faithful Dolphin. It is so beautiful that the God Apollo creates a constellation in the heavens to shine forever in their memory.
